"Designer Babies" - The Next Stage

Saw this blog post by Al Mohler the other day and it has really been on my mind.  The whole idea of aborting the "wrong baby" is appalling to begin with, but Mohler brings up the "bigger" issue here: the idea of using abortions as a "search and destroy" mission for babies who are somehow not what the parents want them to be.  Now it's Down syndrome babies...next up: babies who carry the markers for Autism...after that, what?  "This baby is going to have blue eyes and we want a brown eyed baby..."?

The implications are horrifying.

One more reason to continue in prayer for our unsaved (and saved) friends who are still struggling with the lie that abortion is okay...

  1. The "designer" dogs that are so en vogue these days have started me down this rabbit trail before. Really, the implications of "designer children" are all around, be it through cloning, aborting the "wrong" children, etc. When it comes to children with special needs, people will often say, "you just don't know what it's like." To that, I think, it's so true. My heart goes out to parents of children with special needs, because I can imagine the stress and exhaustion. My "typical" children give me such a chip of that ice berg ... so really I do have a special place in my heart for parents that are raising kids with special needs. I've even had the chance to get to know some of these parents, and when they're being candid, many of them will admit that they have been handed more than they bargained for. But, I have yet to meet a parent of any child that truly believes (even if at moments the thought passes through their minds) that their life would be better without their children. Children are a blessing from God, and they are given to us because He intends it to be us who raises them (I'm not making any implications about adoption ... just in general, when a child is brought into this world, God has parents selected to raise that child). Who are we to argue? When have our plans ever been better than His? Serious soap box, I know, but hey know you know I'm reading :) Blessings Sisters!

  2. That was a great "soap box"! :-)
I read an article the other day on a seemingly unrelated subject (it was on homosexuality!) that made a point I believe is quite relevant to this discussion. The quote said, "Efforts to claim a genetic basis for homosexuality are rooted in the assumption that our genes tell us what God's intention for us is. In a fallen world, that is a faulty assumption. Only the Word of God can tell us what God's intention is. We cannot derive our sexual morality from a laboratory..."
*God's Word* tells us that children are a gift from the Lord -- not "children who are wanted" or "children who are healthy" or whatever. When we pay more attention to what science says over what the Word says, we are on a slippery slope indeed!

  3. We have had similar conversations at our house too, but starting from our political discussions. It seems that people who are "Progressive" in their political standing are the ones always pushing the point that "everyone is equal," and that there should be no "judging" (unless of course the Progressive is judging a Capitalist business person, Christian, etc.). We (they say) shouldn't "judge" a person for anything ~ abortion, homosexuality, etc.

We have come to the conclusion that the reason behind this may very well be that they do not want to submit to a Moral Authority (i.e., God).
IF we are all equal, AND we are not to judge (except "right wing fundamentalists"), THEN no one can tell anyone what to do ~~ including direct instruction from the Word of God.

We also believe that this mindset is coming directly from two sources in our culture (aside from the sin nature): the mainstream media, and (apologies here) the public school system (think "NEA"). Think about it ~~ evolution is touted as "fact," when serious study of Creation science shows that a Biblical view is not only plausible, but much more believable. However, most people believe in evolution because it is both "taught and caught" as fact. This includes the "survival of the fittest" mentality, which then leads to "no guilt" abortions. Also, if there is no God, then why not???

Why not anything, for that matter...
    Scary days...
